CLIMATE CHANGE PERFORMANCE INDEX 2024

The Climate Change Performance Index monitors climate mitigation progress of 63 countries and the European Union, together responsible for more than 90% of global emissions. The race against time continues: global emissions must nearly halve by 2030, and reducing the use of fossil fuels should account for most of that.

WHAT’S TO COME IN 2024 ?

1. U.S. elections results. After a grueling and exhausting Biden-Trump rematch, U.S. President Joe Biden will narrowly eke out a win for a second term, in yet another election cycle marred by disinformation that will muddy the waters on what’s fact and what’s not, with more shouts about “stolen votes.” Republicans will regain control of the Senate by two or three seats, and Democrats will gain narrow control of the House by under 10 seats, setting the stage for another complex, messy, political headache of a divided government.

GLOBAL ELECTIONS IN 2024

A wave of elections in geopolitically significant markets representing about 54% of the global population and nearly 60% of global GDP will occur in 2024. These elections will be held amid already heightened mistrust in governments. Such dynamics, combined with nationalist and populist trends and polarizing issues, increase the risk of social unrest surrounding elections. This global elections super cycle will generate regulatory and policy uncertainty, with long-term implications for industrial strategies, climate policies and ongoing military conflicts.

REMEMBERING JACQUES DELORS AND THE DELORS COMMISSION

The Delors Commission was the administration of Jacques Delors, the eighth President of the European Commission. Delors presided over the European Commission for three terms (though the last one lasted for around a year). The first term lasted from 1985 to 1988, the second until 1992 and the final one until 1994, making Delors the longest serving president, and his Commission is also seen as the most successful at advancing European integration.

TRUMP’S RADICAL SECOND-TERM AGENDA

As he seeks a return to the Oval Office, former President Donald Trump and his allies have promised a sweeping transformation of the federal government that would wield the executive branch’s power in radical and unprecedented ways. The agenda they are crafting would put into practice Trump’s hardline views that he has publicly expressed during his latest campaign for president and will almost certainly face a series of legal and political challenges.
