POLARIZATION IN AMERICA

Political division has been on the rise for years in the U.S. The gap between the two parties has grown sharply in Congress, while the share of Americans who interact with people from the other party has plummeted. Furthermore, many Americans only read news or get information from sources that align with their political beliefs, which exacerbates fundamental disagreements about the basic facts of many political problems. In other words, hatred specifically, hatred of the other party increasingly defines U.S. politics.

THE UK SHOULD JOIN THE EUROPEAN ECONOMIC AREA (EEA) AND THE CUSTOMS UNION

By joining the European Economic Area (EEA), the UK would be able to fully participate in the single market, without the EU’s agricultural and fisheries policies. On top of this, rejoining the customs union (which is separate from the EEA), would allow for the restoration of frictionless trade flows between the UK and its largest trading partner. This  would solve two huge problems.

IMPLICATIONS FROM A RUSSIAN GAS CUT-OFF FOR THE EURO AREA

  1. A full cut-off from Russian gas would cause gas rationing in early-2023, triggering a recession in the euro area. Only if overall gas consumption of households and firms can be reduced; and concerted action among EU members will help mitigate adverse effects of a cut-off of Russian gas.
  2. Two of the largest euro area economies, Germany, and Italy, remain the most vulnerable.
