RUSSIAN DESPICABLE SHOW TRIAL OF PRISONERS OF WAR

  1. Under international law, individuals entitled to prisoner of war status have combatant immunity and cannot be prosecuted for having participated in hostilities or for lawful acts of war committed during the armed conflict.
  2. If POWs are charged with crimes, they are entitled to due process and fair trial guarantees.
  3. International humanitarian law prohibits the establishment of courts to judge POWs,  willfully depriving a prisoner of war of the rights of fair and regular trial amounts to a war crime.

A PRAGMATIC VISION NOT TO CHANGE THE WORLD IS NEEDED

  1.  fight we are in is for something broader and more fundamental than democracy against autocracy. It is the right of peoples the world over to determine their own futures and to be free from naked aggression. This requires an orderly world where the law of the jungle does not operate.

The fact that nondemocratic systems have been so widespread and growing in number is not because evil rules the world, but because in many places circumstances are simply not ripe for stable democracy.

COUNTERING RUSSIAN INFLUENCE IN AFRICA

TURKEY’S BALANCING ACT

Turkey’s balancing act can be measured act along three dimensions: helping Ukraine avoid defeat, avoiding open conflict with Russia while demonstrating solidarity with the West, and increasing Ankara’s regional diplomatic weight. On all three, the Turks have performed reasonably well. Early provision of military aid, especially armed drones, helped blunt the Russian assault on Kyiv. As the grain-corridor deal shows, Turkey’s influential role in the war makes it likely that it will also play an influential role in whatever peace follows.
