THE BRATISLAVA ROADMAP

  1. Full commitment to implementing the EU-Turkey statement as well as continued support to the countries of the Western Balkans.
  2. Commitment by a number of Member States to offer immediate assistance to strengthen the protection of Bulgaria's border with Turkey, and continue support to other frontline States.
  3. Before the end of the year, full capacity for rapid reaction of the European Border and Coast Guard, now signed into law.

EU REFORM ABSENT OF THE BRATISLAVA ROADMAP

It is crucial for the EU to undertake some kind of reform to meet citizen demand, especially when it comes to specific policies. There are some reforms that could be implemented that would increase support among many groups throughout the EU. People care deeply about who governs them. But they are also concerned about procedural aspects.

BUSINESSEUROPE PROPOSED EUROPEAN STRATEGY

1. Focus on where the EU can indeed add value and stay away from matters better dealt with at national level (more Europe where needed, such as for external borders management, to further develop the Single Market and to govern the Eurozone and less where it does not add value);

2. Define and implement a really coherent global strategy with a strong economic pillar and an ambitious trade policy to open up market access for goods, services and resources as well as modern and effective trade defence instruments;

DON’T MEDDLE IN U.S. ELECTIONS

It is  highly unusual for foreign diplomats and political leaders to express concern, even privately, about candidates in the midst of a U.S. presidential campaign. Yet, senior leaders in several European countries have made public comments criticizing Trump’s positions and some have openly endorsed Hillary Clinton. Beside being seen meddling in U.S. domestic politics, the same people should be mindful that they will have to work with whoever wins. Recent history is replete with examples where the world's opinion of a US presidential candidate backfired against those same critics.

THE EU EXISTENTIAL CRISIS

The Brexit fallout is likely to further polarize European politics as voters become more insecure. German dominance of the EU will increase, and so, too, will the anti-German backlash in many countries. With a weak and divided EU unable to resolve Europe’s many crises, and with nationalism resurgent, we can expect further disintegration in different forms.

IMPROVING EUROPEAN GOVERNANCE MUST BE HIGH ON THE POLITICAL AGENDA

It is necessary to bring EU governance forward as a response to the citizens’ quest for legitimacy through enhanced democratization in the decision-making mechanisms and as a tool that would increase the leverage and competitiveness of the EU to have an efficient way of functioning. In that respect, the legitimacy and the representative power of the EU and its institutions need to be put under scrutiny, as powerful and at the same time efficient decision making mechanisms are necessary for the EU.

MAKING EU COPYRIGHT RULES FIT FOR THE DIGITAL AGE

Delivering on its Digital Single Market strategy, the Commission’s proposal  is to allow Europeans to travel with their online content and to modernise EU copyright rules. At present, Europeans travelling within the EU may be cut off from online services providing films, sports broadcasts, music, e-books or games that they have paid for in their home country. The  proposed Regulation on the cross-border portability of online content services addresses these restrictions in order to allow EU residents to travel with the digital content they have purchased or subscribed to at home.
