GUIDING QUESTIONS FOR CORPORATE CLIMATE GOVERNANCE

Today businesses need to engage in responsible, proactive lobbying for climate action that reduces emissions.

Companies can and must reduce emissions, but only public policy can elevate these efforts to the scale and pace of emissions reductions needed to mitigate climate change.  The political influence of climate-forward businesses with long histories of successful lobbying on other industry-specific issues can lend climate policies the credibility they need to achieve lasting impact.

FIGHTING CORRUPTION IN THE EU: A LONG WAY TO GO

Corruption is the abuse of power for private gain. Corruption takes many forms, such as bribery, trading in influence, abuse of functions, but can also hide behind nepotism, conflicts of interest, or revolving doors between the public and the private sectors. It acts as a drag on economic growth, by creating business uncertainty, slowing processes, and imposing additional costs.

The founders of the U.S. Constitution were intent on ensuring that foreign entities did not influence America’s democratic system. CONFLICT OF INTEREST LAWS IN EU MEMBER STATES

Austria: The Austrian Constitution (1920, last amended 2016) regulates conflicts of interests regarding the President, while the Incompatibility Act (1983, last amended 2013) regulates for Ministers and MPs. The only limitation for the President is not holding any other occupation. This rule also applies to Ministers. The incompatibility committee may grant the participation of Ministers and MPs in the private sector or in state-owned enterprises. Similarly, the responsible agency must approve any outside employment of Civil servants.
