THE ROOTCAUSE OF TAX PAYMENTS OPTIMIZATION IN THE EU

There are sharp differences in corporate tax rates and incentives in Europe to optimize tax payments and in the process boost profits. The European Union is a single market, which means that companies can incorporate anywhere and sell their goods and sefvices across the continent, but because there is no harmonised tax system, it's a playground for smart accountants and tax specialists who know how to exploit the differences.

AALEP ADOPTS A FREE MEMBERSHIP STRUCTURE (FREEMIUM)

AALEP has decided to adopt a Free Membership structure (Freemium), in which a majority of members will pay zero dues. Freemium is the combination of the words 'Free' and 'Premium'. Under this business model, simple and basic services will be offered for free for the user and more advanced or additional features at a premium. We believe this new model better fits with our rapidly changing profession and our target audience of influential government relations professionals.

Article 17 of the Lisbon treaty now gives the Parliament the right to elect the Commission president. It states: “Taking into account the elections of the European Parliament and after having held the appropriate consultations, the European Council acting by a qualified majority shall propose to the European Parliament a candidate for the president of the Commission. This candidate shall be elected by the European Parliament by a majority of its members.”

AALEP congratulates Burson Marsteller, a leading Public Affairs and Communications Agency for having launched a new website called European Decides (http://europedecides.eu) whose purpose is to follow the upcoming Euuropean elections, including the European Parliament elections, the selection of new presidents of the European Commission and the European Council, New European Commissioners and New High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Council.

TRANSPARENCY OF LOBBYING IN CROATIA

Lobbying is not regulated in Croatia. There is no obligation for lobbyists to be registered and no transparency standards are set in this field. Although over time there has been some reflection at government level on the possible regulation of lobbying, no legislative initiative has materialised to date. Some ad-hoc initiatives are being implemented, such as the Croatian Society of Lobbyists consisting of 80 members, which has taken steps to promote ethics and transparency in lobbying activities, including the setting-up of a voluntary registration system.
