THE POLISH LAW AND JUSTICE (PiS) PARTY AND THE EU

The victory of the Law and Justice (PiS) party in Poland could usher in "significant" changes to the geopolitical landscape, with "outsiders", especially in Berlin and Brussels. The list of problems to be faced by Brussels with the PiS victory is long and multifaceted, based primarily on the party's ideology of promoting what it perceives as the country's national interests before common European interests.

ENHANCING PEOPLE TO PEOPLE RELATIONS SHOULD BE THE CORNERSTONE OF RENEWED EU-RUSSIA TIES

'People-to-people' contact means interaction between the normal citizens of the EU and Russia at various levels without any official interference and guidance. For such contacts, they obviously have to obtain proper visas and travel documents, but the state's role should end there and beyond that it is the spirit of their interaction and understanding which would shape up ideas, thoughts and responses.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCES IN THE EU TOURISM SECTOR

The tourism sector accounts for almost 25 million jobs in Europe (around 11% of the total employment). The sector provides employment both to highly qualified, as well as to low-skilled workers. It offers job opportunities to both workers who enter the job market for the first time and to people re-entering the job market. UPGRADING SKILLS AND COMPETENCES ACROSS THE TOURISM SECTOR

The tourism sector is a very complex industry, encompassing a wide range of economic activities in every region of Europe and involving a substantial investment in human capital. CLASSICAL FORMS OF PUBLIC POLICY ADVOCACY ARE DOOMED TO FAIL

In recent years, the representation of political interests has experienced a fundamental transformation. Political decisions are becoming increasingly complex and require professional knowledge that extends beyond the political level. Governing has become more transparent and is now faced with a critical public that is making increasing use of new forms of communication and mobilisation. The perception of the representation of business interests meaning an unfair form of influence is being strengthened by prominent individual cases with a strong focus on particular interests.

MEASURING EU TOURISM COMPETITIVENESS

Definition

Tourism competitiveness for a destination is about the ability of the place to optimise its attractiveness for residents and non-residents, to deliver quality, innovative, and attractive (e.g. providing good value for money) tourism services to consumers and to gain market shares on the domestic and global market places, while ensuring that the available resources supporting tourism are used efficiently and in a sustainable way.

THE EP EUROPEAN TOURISM DEVELOPMENT, CULTURAL HERITAGE, WAY OF ST. JAMES AND OTHER EUROPEAN CULTURAL ROUTES INTERGROUP

Even though an Intergroup has no legislative power, it can be valuable having such representation in the European Parliament. At the minimum, it is a multiparty forum where one can exchange views and propose ideas on a particular subject in an informal way. Even with no official status in the European Parliament, intergroups tend to be targeted by pressure groups, which see them as an easy way to gain influence in the Parliament. They allow lobbyists to carry out consultations very easily and to create links with the MEPs.

THE VIEW OF THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION ON THE TOURISM EUROPE FORUM (TEF)

"The European Commission shares the views that the tourism sector would benefit from a greater recognition by the public administrations and the European Institutions. Indeed, one of the pillars of the EU tourism policy is the facilitation of collaboartion among different stakeholders to work together better, including a more effective governance of the sector. Therefore, the European Commission welcomes the many initiatives already on going inthis direction.
