NATIONALIST AND POPULIST PARTIES IN THE EU

Nationalist and populist parties are alive and kicking in Europe. Nationalist/populist parties (most, but not all, are from the far right) remain strong in Europe and could benefit from the current disarray in the European Union. Deep-rooted and popular concerns remain about illegal migration and the concentration of power in Brussels, compounded by poor governance in some European countries and disillusionment with traditional political parties. Economic problems continue in many European countries, as do concerns about globalization.

EUROPE’S PARALYSIS

While nations like North Korea and China take advantage of Trumpian chaos to improve their position in the international order, Europe remains paralyzed. European foreign policy, particularly toward great powers, remains dependent on the American position. COUNTERING TRUMP’S THREATS

European leaders are sick and tired of Trump, who has been an exasperating, unpredictable and unfriendly negotiating partner to them, fitting no definition of an ally. But the Europeans are reluctant to abandon the existing trade rules and allow them to be replaced by an unpredictable might-based system. This isn’t merely about commercial interests; its about principles and rules.
