ROOT CAUSES FOR THE LOW MORALE IN THE RUSSIAN ARMY

- Moscow’s assault on Ukraine is broadly opposed by rank-and-file soldiers. Just 10 percent of Russian soldiers support the war, with the remainder fearing to speak out. Those who are against the war are afraid of the consequences of leaving
- There is a culture and resentment in the Russian army that tears down the façade of total support for the war portrayed in the Russian propaganda.
- People in the Russian army are unhappy about what’s going on in Ukraine, they’re unhappy about the government and their commanders, they’re unhappy with Putin and his politics, they’re unhappy with the Minister of Defense who has never served in the army.
- Military units “refusing orders” and armed stand-offs between officers and their troops
- Problems with pay
- Combat stress
- Lack of professionalism
- Army is barely functioning and lacks training and equipment.
- Poor logistics: Critical deficiencies in military logistic support.. The Russian military logistic system is not organised, trained, or equipped to provide the kind of expeditionary logistics that would be required for a successful campaign in Ukraine. This is a system that is not fit for purpose.
- Russian military culture reflects a Russian military-industrial system rife with corruption. This corruption resonates at tactical levels too, and amongst its effects are the diversion and wastage of considerable amounts of materiel, capability, and human talent. The root cause of much of the failure of Russia’s logistic planning and execution is a lack of regard for individual personnel support based on a cultural bias towards mass and the needs of the group over individuals. This has been made worse by widespread corruption and lack of transparency
- Poor leadership
- Limited opportunity for rotation of units of combat
- Very heavy casualties Up to 80,000 Russians have been killed or wounded in Ukraine since the war began in late February
- Russian armed forces have also lost "3,000 to 4,000" armoured vehicles, and are running low on precision-guided missiles, including air and sea-launched cruise missiles.
