PUBLIC POLICY ADVOCACY OF MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS

There are 3 prime associations that represent medicine practitioners. The Standing Committee of European Doctors (CPME), the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) and  the European Association of Senior Hospital Physicians (AEMH). All three pursue general objectives: Exchange of information, study of the conditions influencing medical practice, study of health care systems, competency of medicine practitioners, defense of medical ethics, pre-and post graduate medical training of doctors, high standards of continuing medical education (CME), improvement of health care.

1. Standing Committee of European Doctors (CPME)

The Standing Committee of European Doctors (CPME) is composed of 27 members. Its aims is promote the highest standards of medical training and medical practice in order to achieve the highest quality of health care for all patients in Europe. CPME is also concerned with the promotion of public health, the relationship between patients and doctors and the free movement of doctors within the European Union. To achieve its goals, CPME co-operates proactively with the Institutions of the European Union. Policies are being set both in answer to developments in Europe as well as by taking the lead in matters regarding the profession and patient care.

2. European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS)

The UEMS represents more than 50 medical disciplines through various bodies and structures. The most important ones are the 41 Specialist Sections, which represent independently recognised specialties. They have created a European Board as a subgroup, in conjunction with the relevant European Society, with a view to defining European standards of medical education and training. They also contribute to the work of Multidisciplinary Joint Committees (MJC) which address fields of a multidisciplinary nature.

3. European Association of Senior Hospital Physicians (AEMH)

The AEMH provides a European platform for hospital physicians, which develops and maintains a spirit of cooperation and communication among its national member delegations, improving the understanding of the different health systems. It encourages the exchange of ideas and experiences and promotes discussion among doctors, patients and politicians with the major objective of promoting health and improving patient safety.
