PRESENCE OF U.S. PRESS CORPS IN BERLIN, BRUSSELS, LONDON, PARIS AND ROME

The U.S. Press Corps is particularly present in 5 European Cities: Berlin, Brussels, London, Paris and Rome. The EU needs to be more proactive vis-à-vis U.S. media foreign correspondents.

EU public policy lacks sufficient reach and explanation to foreign media. Fostering meaningful relationship with foreign journalists  is of paramount importance because they  can be highly effective, credible messengers. The EU should involve private sector participation because it adds to some extent a heat shield that can be useful when tackling controversial issues that might have negative political or diplomatic repercussions. Private messengers can engage in this kind of debate more often than officials can for fear of political backlash. Also media or entertainment spokespeople may be more likely to cooperate with private sources, such as NGOs than with an effort directly funded by the government.

Most U.S. correspondents (90%) initiate topics for stories themselves but the influence of editorial supervisors is strongly felt. Government officials and media content in the host country are the most important resources for foreign correspondents. Linking with foreign press associations in Germany, UK, France and Italy is of paramount importance: In Berlin (Verein der Ausländische Presse in Deutschland where American journalists account for 15% of the entire group), in London (Foreign Press Association) and in Paris (Anglo-American Press Association of Paris).
