SPAIN UNEMPLOYMENT CALAMITY
According to the data compiled by the National Statistics Institute, the last quarter of 2012 closed with 5,965,400 unemployed, representing 26.02% of the labour force. 1 out of every four Spaniards of working age is now unemployed.
According to the latest data from the Labour Force Survey, the number of households in Spain with all its members unemployed reached 1,833,700 in 2012
Unemployment rate under the age of 25 now stands at a staggering 60%
Spain’s overall unemployment rate is more than double the EU average
Two regions have over 30% unemployment – Andalusia (31.2%) and the Canary Islands (30.9%). They are followed by Extremadura (28.5%), Murcia (26.7%) and the autonomous cities of Ceuta (29.1%) and Melilla (28.1%).
No other region has an unemployment rate higher than the national average though close to it are Valencia (25.4%), the Balearic Islands (25.2%), Castilla-La Mancha (24.4%) and Catalonia (20.5%).
The regions with less unemployment are Cantabria (15.9%), Navarra (13.8%), the Basque Country (12.6%) and Aragón (16.8%), followed by Asturias (18.9%), Galicia (18.3%), Castilla y León (17.1%), La Rioja (18.7%) and Madrid (18.5%)
