RUSSIAN EMBARGO: A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY FOR BRAZIL
Russia has decided to renew food supplies from Brazilian companies. Brazil is the world's top exporter of beef, chicken and soybeans, and one of the only countries in the world with land available to ramp up agricultural production. The Russian market is interested in products like pork, beef, poultry, powdered milk, butter, cheese and fruit and vegetables. 89 Brazilian exporters will supply the Russian market with meat and dairy products. The pork and poultry industries alone are expected to bring in $200-300 million.
Dairy Products: In May, 2014, Russia agreed on veterinary certificates for dairy products, paving the way for Brazilian milk exports to Russia. On August 7, almost 90 agricultural producers in Brazil were approved to export meat and dairy products to Russia.
Poultry : Brazil exports $8 billion worth of chicken each year, but Russia currently accounts for only 3 percent of that. In 2013, Brazil's Russian chicken sales amounted to 47,000 metric tons, worth $130 million to $150 million. Brazil's will increase exports by 150,000 tonnes per year. There are 40 poultry producers in Brazil.
Pork: Brazil exported 134,000 metric tons of pork to Russia in 2013, which accounted for 26 percent of its exports. There are 12 pork manufacturers in Brazil.
Beef: Brazil’s beef industry is also looking for a boost. It sold 303,000 metric tons of beef to Russia last year, worth $1.2 billion. Brazil is the world’s largest beef exporter, exporting around 2.03 million metric tons compared to the United States' 1.14 million tons. The world’s biggest meat producer, JBS SA, is a Brazilian company. There are more than two dozen beef production facilities, which now have approval to export to Russia. Beef products topped Brazil's exports to Russia in the first six months of the year.
Brazil's other agricultural exports to Russia include sugar, coffee, orange juice and bananas. In 2013, agricultural exports to Russia were worth $2.72 billion.
