GUY VERHOFSTADT PRIORITIES FOR THE EC

- To boost the economy by completing the single market, working for an EU-US Free Trade Agreement and better support for the SMEs;
- To support education reform by promoting apprenticeships and the recognition of diplomas across Europe;
- To protect the environment and ensure energy security by fixing the emission trading system and investing in a pan-European electricity grid;
- To promote a more competitive Europe by investing in future oriented sectors such as renewable energy;
- To reduce EU budget waste by simplifying rules, cutting the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), cutting funds for projects that don't deliver on time and fighting for a single seat for the European Parliament;
- To keep EU immigratio open to skills and talents from around the world, whilst tackling illegal immigration more effectively;
- To strengthen EU economic governance with an effective banking union and automatic sanctions against countries that go too far in debt;
- To fight for a strong EU in the world with an EU seat in the UN Security Council and IMF and a focus on steady EU enlargement;
- To preserve fundamental rights and civil liberties including a mechanism to enforce sanctions on EU countries that breach these rights;
- To push for a new EU Treaty to be drawn in order to promote a more transparent and democratic EU
