LOBBYING DEFINITION “A LA EU”

In September 2016, the European Commission launched a proposal for a so-called ‘mandatory’ lobby transparency register. According to the European Commission the new Agreement streamlines the broad definition of activities covered by the Register which is one of the main strengths of the current EU system compared to many national lobbying regulation regimes.

NEW TRANSPARENCY RULES IN THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT

The Members of the European Parliament  voted on 13 December to change their rules of procedure in an effort to make the parliamentary activity more efficient, but also more transparent (the Corbett report). However, the report was fiercely disputed and in some cases some MEPs opposed making the decisions more open to the public. Among the topics voted upon were  the second jobs of the MEPs and regulating the meetings with lobbyists.

A NEW ERA IN U.S.-RUSSIA RELATIONS

A new era in U.S-Russia relations is coming, one that will be driven by business relationships, rather than security concerns or other isues. Both Russia and the United States will work on problems together, instead of remaining consistently obstructed by a long history of toxic personal relationships. President-elect Trump is a man who is open for business and President Putin is a man who means business. The crux of world peace and general prosperity is contingent upon the two countries working in concert, rather than under the guise of suspicion and hatred.

REVIVING U.S.- RUSSIA RELATIONS

The Trump presidency may present an opportunity to revive the U.S.-Russia relationship. During their recent conversation Mr. Putin and Mr. Trump not only agreed on the absolutely unsatisfactory state of bilateral relations but also expressed support for active joint efforts to normalize relations and pursue constructive cooperation on the broadest possible range of issues.
