EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT'S BUDGET BY NUMBERS

The 2013 EU budget amounts to € 132.8 billion. The European Parliament's budget represents 1.3% of the total EU budget or € 1,7 billion.

37% of the EP's budget (€ 629 million) is for staff expenses, mainly salaries for the 6000 officials working in the General Secretariat and in the Political Groups. Moreover, this expenditures covers interpretation costs, the costs of external translation and staff mission expenses.
 

About 24% of the EP's budget (€ 408 million) is dedicated to MEP's expenses, including salaries, costs for travel, offices and the pay of personal assistants.

11% of the budget (€ 187 million) is for expenditures on Parliament's buildings. It covers property purchase, improvement and rental, plus running costs in Parliament's three main places of work- Brussels, Luxembourg and Strasbourg as well as for its information offices in the 27 Member States. The annual cost of having plenary sessions is estimated at € 200 million a year.

23% of the budget (€ 391 million) is for information and administrative expenditures such as IT and telecommunications.

5% of the budget (€ 85 million) is for Political Group actrivities.
