DISTRIBUTION OF THINK TANKS IN EUROPE

Think tanks are public policy research, analysis, and engagement institutions that generate policy- oriented research, analysis, and advice on domestic and international issues that enable policymakers and the public to make informed decisions about public policy issues. Think tanks may be affiliated with a political party, a university, or a government; they are independent institutions that are structured as permanent bodies, not ad hoc commissions.

Categories of Think Tank Affiliations

  1. Autonomous and independent think tanks: They are independent from any one interest group or donor and autonomous in their operations and funding from government
  2. Quasi- independent think tanks: They are autonomous from government but controlled by an interest group, donor, or contracting agency that provides a majority of the funding and has significant influence over operations.
  3. Government affiliated think tanks : They are part of the formal structure of government
  4. Quasi- governmental think tanks: They are funded exclusively by government grants and contracts but not a part of the formal structure of government
  5. University affiliated think tanks:  Policy research center at a university
  6. Political party affiliated think tanks: They are formally affiliated with a politi cal party
  7. Corporate (for profit) think tanks:  For profit public policy research organ ization, affiliated with a corporation or merely operating on a for- profit basis
