BREXIT IN PERSPECTIVE

Edited from a paper “Britain, the EU and the Sovereignty Myth” written by Robin Niblett, Director of Chatham House

THE AMERICAN LOBBY IN BRUSSELS

The EU is a highly lucrative market for US-owned firms with large direct investments. The enormous volume of these investments makes it difficult to separate ‘European’ from ‘American’ business interests in the EU. American companies have developed their own political links to the EU. In particular the American Chamber to the European Union (AmCham EU) is an important agent of US influence in Brussels. Most of its members are concerned with ensuring that the political- legal framework in Europe is conducive to their business interests.

WHAT A TRUMP VICTORY WOULD MEAN FOR EUROPE

Sir Michael Leigh, a Senior Fellow at the German Marshall Fund of the United States and a former European Commission Director-General recently wrote a piece on the ‘ Implications of a Trump presidency for Europe’. He says that Donald Trump’s election would have grave consequences for Europe, that a President Trump would disrupt transatlantic relations, that he distrusts allies, sees them as free-riders and questions the most basic NATO principle that an attack on one is an attack on all.

WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF CLINTON WAS INDICTED AFTER WINNING THE PRESIDENCY?

  1. Could Clinton pardon herself if she becomes President? She most certainly can. The power of pardon is without limitation. A President can pardon any person, including the President. If Clinton were to issue her own pardon, she would be poisoning herself politically. It is the equivalent of admitting guilt, but evading the consequences. The public outrage would be deafening.

Felony mishandling of classified information, including most closely guarded intelligence secrets; misappropriation and destruction of tens of thousands of government records are serious criminal offenses.
