STRENGTHENING EU-US ENERGY COOPERATION

Regardless of the Trump Administration’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement, the climate agenda is not going away. Europe will want to keep the United States engaged on climate as much as possible, and it is not in the US interest to be isolated on this issue. Despite differences on both sides of the Atlantic, there will be strong incentives for the United States and the EU to work together on a structure that allows continued forward movement on global capital engagement. EU-US energy cooperation has a win-win history.

NATIONAL PARLIAMENTS SCRUTINY OF EU LEGISLATION

There are four ways in which different scrutiny systems support parliamentarians to fulfil their motivations when engaging with EU matters:

STATUS OF TRUMP’S NOMINATIONS FOR AMBASSADORSHIPS

As soon as  Trump took office, he ordered all of Obama’s Political-Appointee Ambassadors to depart immediately. The Career Ambassadors were left in place, but the departure of the political ones has left 54 of 189 Ambassadorships vacant. Of the 10 Ambassadors Trump has formally nominated, only two are career officers and are being sent to Senegal and Congo. The eight political appointees have few foreign policy credentials but a clear political connection to Trump.
