GUIDING QUESTIONS FOR CORPORATE CLIMATE GOVERNANCE

Today businesses need to engage in responsible, proactive lobbying for climate action that reduces emissions.

Companies can and must reduce emissions, but only public policy can elevate these efforts to the scale and pace of emissions reductions needed to mitigate climate change.  The political influence of climate-forward businesses with long histories of successful lobbying on other industry-specific issues can lend climate policies the credibility they need to achieve lasting impact.

FIGHTING CORRUPTION IN THE EU: A LONG WAY TO GO

Corruption is the abuse of power for private gain. Corruption takes many forms, such as bribery, trading in influence, abuse of functions, but can also hide behind nepotism, conflicts of interest, or revolving doors between the public and the private sectors. Its effects are serious and widespread. Corruption constitutes a threat to security, as an enabler for crime and terrorism. It acts as a drag on economic growth, by creating business uncertainty, slowing processes, and imposing additional costs.

EU WHISTLEBLOWER PROTECTION DIRECTIVE

New law has been passed to establish EU-wide rules that will protect whistleblowers who report breaches of EU law.

The new law will establish safe channels for reporting both within an organisation and to public authorities. It will also protect whistleblowers against dismissal, demotion and other forms of retaliation and require national authorities to inform citizens and provide training for public authorities on how to deal with whistleblowers.

ABOUT IMPROPER FOREIGN INFLUENCE IN THE AMERICAN POLITICAL SYSTEM

Author: Michael Sozan, senior fellow on the Center for American Progress’ Democracy and Government Reform team.

The founders of the U.S. Constitution were intent on ensuring that foreign entities did not influence America’s democratic system. They knew that foreign involvement in U.S. elections or policymaking posed an enormous threat to national sovereignty and that a president who would invite foreign interference for his own political benefit would be subject to impeachment.

CONFLICT OF INTEREST LAWS IN EU MEMBER STATES

Austria: The Austrian Constitution (1920, last amended 2016) regulates conflicts of interests regarding the President, while the Incompatibility Act (1983, last amended 2013) regulates for Ministers and MPs. The only limitation for the President is not holding any other occupation. This rule also applies to Ministers. The incompatibility committee may grant the participation of Ministers and MPs in the private sector or in state-owned enterprises. Similarly, the responsible agency must approve any outside employment of Civil servants.

Trade Strategy

I am a firm believer in pursuing an open and fair trade policy that strengthens the EU’s position in the world, promotes our values and protects our interests. International trade is the lifeline of the EU’s economy. It accounts for almost 35% of the EU’s Gross Domestic Product, it generates jobs and it ensures that consumers and companies have access to the best possible products at the best price.
