IN THE ABSENCE OF A COHERENT EU FOREIGN POLICY, SOME EU MEMBER STATES REACH OUT DIRECTLY TO PRESIDENT-ELECT DONALD TRUMP

- Hungary: Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has spoken on the telephone with the President-elect of the United States Donald Trump, who has invited him to Washington. The Prime Minister said that Hungary’s position has improved significantly, and Mr.Trump made it clear that he thinks highly of Hungary
- Greece: Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has spoken with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. The Prime Minister congratulated Mr. Trump on his victory in the U.S. elections and underlined the close ties of friendship and cooperation between the Greek and American people. During their discussion there was stress on Greece’s crucial role for peace and security in the surrounding region, especially at a time of increasing destabilization, and a reference to the great efforts made by the Greek people to face the economic and refugee crises. They also confirmed the importance of strengthening strategic cooperation between the two countries in a series of areas. Lastly, they agreed to maintain regular communication over the coming period.
- Sweden: Prime Minister Stefan Löfven wrote to Donald Trump and urged the President-elect not to cut transatlantic ties and remain involved in European security politics." Global and regional challenges require transatlantic cooperation. The United States' engagement in Europe is central for both European and American security. Sweden is committed to the security situation in Europe and in our neighbourhood through partnership with Nato, bilateral security and defence cooperation with key countries such as the United States. The promotion of dialogue and reduction of tension are fundamental elements in our approach."The Prime Minister highlighted Sweden's role in contributing to the anti-Isis coalition – Sweden supplies troops in Iraq – and humanitarian aid across the world. "We value our cooperation with the United States on anti-terrorism and on countering violent extremism. Mr. Löfven argues that a trade agreement between the US and Europe would generate jobs in both regions. "Swedish businesses and industry directly supprot more than 300,000 jobs in the US. The benefits from Swedish investments are providing jobs in all 50 states.
- Slovenia: Prime Minister Cerar congratulated the presidential couple, and talked about the conditions in Slovenia and the modernization of the country lead by his government. The Prime Minister said Slovenia could become the bridge between the U.S. and Russia but no specfic conclusion was reached.
