Public Policy Advocates must be prepared to have everything they say placed on the record and keep their contribution timely and to the point.

10 Golden rules for Public Policy Advocacy in the European Parliament

  1. Public Policy Advocates need to be well pepared and understand the individual work process of every MEP they approach.
  2. Public Policy Advocates need to keep their communication short and concise, especially written contributions.
  3. Public Policy Advocates need to cut on lengthy presentations and compress information as much as possible.
  4. Public Policy Advocates need to understand and respect the differences in work, procedures and routines because they vary between MEPs, political groups, committees and secretariat.
  5. Public Policy Advocates need to provide clear and strategic advice to their clients in order to enable timely and useful contributions to legislative procedure.
  6. Public Policy Advocates need to explain to their clients the state of play in the policy debate, share with them MEP's opinions and explain Parliament's procedures.
  7. Public Policy Advocates need to engage early in the process in order to provide relevant information.
  8. Public Policy Advocates need to provide clear feedback on upcoming legislation's impact and whenever possible bring along experts that MEPs can consult in complicated issues.
  9. Public Policy Advocates need to establish strict priorities of where to focus their efforts. Apart from Rapporteurs and Shadow Rapporteurs, it can be valuable to meet with Coordinators in order to get message across in an effective way.
  10. Public Policy Advocates need to keep up a good working relationship with MEP Assistants and avoid harassing them.
